Over the recent years, there has been a wide variety in television programs that are served to the media consumers. One of these varieties include the reality TV and it slowly gained popularity as the media consumers are looking for alternative TV programs. There is also a wide array of variety in the field of reality TV, the shows in this genre range from psychological games to survival challenges. These kinds of program are grabbed by the broadcasting networks due to their cheap production cost and numerous volunteers who would like to take part on the program (Coone, 2006).
The motives of the people joining the reality TV programs are endless. They join for money, fame and TV exposure and popularity which they perceive as far better than being just another face in the world. The viewing population is growing and craves for something in their primetime television viewing. However, we need to assess if this kind of programs are exploiting both the participants and its viewers. People are easily deceived by these programs and they are unconsciously exploited by such programs.
One of the TV reality shows that exploit its participants is “Joe Millionaire”, who is a guy who has good looks and big bank account and tries to seduce a woman. When a woman falls for these physical elements, she is told that the guy is actually poor. The program exploits the participants by making men look like worthless and womanizers and depict women as shallow and materialistic (Coone, 2006). Other reality TV shows also make use of unpleasant behaviors for the purpose of cheap entertainment.
There are shows that cater life-threatening situations such as Fear Factor and Survivor (Idelson, 2007). These shows present potential risks to their participants and rampantly showcase profanity, obscenity and violence to entice its viewers and draw more of them. These have a negative effect on the viewing population which includes children. These may clearly affect their social behavior. The children may realize that such behaviors are acceptable in public, when everything shown is undesirable behaviors. This way, the viewers are exploited just to gather higher ratings for the networks.
