Aluminum was first discovered in 1821 near Les Baux, France, and its principal ore was named Bauxite. In 1825 was when Hans Christian Orsted isolated Aluminum. rsted produced aluminum by reducing aluminum chloride using a potassium-mercury amalgam. In 1827, Friedrich Wohler repeated Orsted’s method, reacting volatilized aluminum trichloride with potassium to produce small amounts of aluminum. Both Orsted and Wohler are credited for the discovery of this element. As a pure element, Aluminum is fairly soft and a silvery-white metal. It’s usually found in nature combined with oxygen. Consequently of its low density, low cost and corrosion resistance.
Aluminum is used widely around the world and it’s also considerably cheap. Since it has good conductive and thermal properties, it is used to form many hard, light, corrosion-resistant alloys. Aluminum is non-magnetic, non-sparking, heat reflective, malleable and an excellent electrical conductor. Because of its natural features, components made of aluminum do not rust like iron. Even though Aluminum may have some good traits and characteristics, it also has some disadvantages. It may be cheap, but it’s more expensive than steel. Aluminum alloys do not have the same strength levels of steel alloys, thus it must be accommodated in design. Aluminum may be strong; however it’s abrasive to tooling because aluminum oxide is very abrasive. In welding, aluminum is quite difficult to weld. Another disadvantage is it’s prone to severe spring back. Beyond these other properties, aluminum is also fairly reactive.
When left unprotected, the surface of an aluminum object quickly becomes dull gray as the aluminum reacts with air to form an oxide. The oxide layer actually protects the metal and prevents it from further reactions with its environment, so that it is usually considered corrosion-resistant. For example, aluminum cans do not disintegrate in the way that coated steel cans do and seem ideal as beverage containers. Being that it is a good conductor of heat, it enables beverages in aluminum containers to be cooled quickly.

Discarded aluminum cans that litter highways, landfills, beaches, and forests are a major environmental pollutant. Many communities have now adopted recycling as a solution to this problem. Aluminum can be useful and at the same time appalling to the atmosphere. Like every element, each have both negative and positive attributes.
Aluminum can help make life easier, but if society abuses its existence, damage occurs to individuals and the planet itself. Some interesting facts about aluminum are that it was thought to have formed during the formation of the solar system through the collisions of hydrogen atoms under intense heat and pressure. Scientists have also announced that Aluminum may be associated with Alzheimer’s disease. This condition mostly affects older people, leading to forgetfulness and loss of mental skills. Nevertheless, it is still vague whether aluminum plays any part in Alzheimer’s disease.
