It has always been the role of educators to create motivation and new insights amidst the conventional practices in today’s education. By allowing creativity and openness to become involved in the process, it opens up student boundaries and allows each one to develop appreciation and skills necessary for growth and development. Doing this, educators can keep up with the increasing challenges of 21st century education and seek to transform students to tackle these trends. The film Dead Poet’s Society is one clear example of an attempt of an educator to make a difference in a traditional and conventional teaching environment.
Reflecting on this principle over today’s students and today’s teachers, it can be argued that so much has changed since the time frame wherein the film was shot. Now, both educators and students have greater luxury and freedom to explore on their potentials and possibilities. The curriculum currently at place seeks to offer dynamic and adaptive actors who can contribute towards increased growth and development. Such actions have opened up parameters of enhancing and cultivating competence and appreciation of the subject. Reflecting on the film, I seek to argue that these issues were not properly addressed.
Since the setting primarily revolves during a time of conservatism and preservation of tradition, embracing new changes given by John Keating are seen as deviant and violations to mandated standards of the school. That is why instead of gaining knowledge, students are left constrained and unable to explore the dimensions of education has to offer and often settling to blend with the norms provided. Looking at this, the issues could have been addressed in such a way that administrators particularly the head master took into consideration the ability of students to expand on their knowledge.
Yes, it is important to set rules and boundaries however if these hinder the ability of students to develop it may not very helpful in practice. Likewise, Nolan should have considered that to maintain the ability of Welton Academy to address change, it must not shut its doors to change rather it must welcome it with both enthusiasm and optimism. It may be that tradition and old values have helped shaped the institution for years. However without taking into account the new changes and its positive impact among actors, Welton Academy would restrain its ability to promote the ability to transcend and enhance student education.
