According to sociologist, C. Wright Mills, people often believe that their private lives can only be explained in terms of their personal successes and failures. They do not to see the links in their own individual lives and the society around them. This process of interpreting your individual life in the context of your community or the society in which you live is called sociological imagination. What is sociological imagination? We are going to discuss being an unmarried pregnant teenage girl and the impact that it has on society.
Teen Pregnancy. What is social imagination? Social imagination is when you are able to discern the relationship social forces and individual actions. This term was coined by C. Wright Mills to describe insight into the discipline of sociology. How does being an unmarried teen affect the social imagination? Approximately 1 million teenage girls get pregnant each year. There are many debates on how to prevent teen pregnancy. They promote abstinence or contraception with hopes that either of these would work. Many feel that the environment controls the increase in teen pregnancy.
Society feels that teens that give birth are more likely to come from low income families. It is also linked to culture, religion, beliefs, laws and lack of support structure. Lack of knowledge is one of the biggest reasons for increase in teen pregnancy. In my personal experience lack of knowledge is the biggest contributor. I was a teen mother that came from middle class society. I grew up in a small community that was well off. My becoming a teen mother was due to lack of knowledge. How did this impact my society? Growing up where I did it was not uncommon to see lower class teens pregnant.
Their social imagination was being a product of their environment. I became a part of that environment when I became pregnant. It affected society due to having to become a part of the system in order to be able to take care of myself and my child. When an unmarried teen becomes pregnant they can choose to either to try and make it on their own or let society take care of them. It is understandable due to some are too young to work. I was able to use it for a short time and get myself in an position that it was no longer needed and provided for myself and my child.
Being and unmarried teen can affect one’s education as well as employment. The correlation between earlier childbearing and failure to complete high school reduces career opportunities for many young women. It will also affect the development of the infant. Teen pregnancy affects younger siblings as to whether to follow in the previous teen steps or to better their lives to not make the same mistake. In conclusion we discussed what social imagination means. Then we discussed how being a pregnant teen unmarried will affect society. We then talked about some of my personal experiences in being an unmarried teen mother.
