Roxanna PanufnikRoxanna was born in London on April 24th, 1968. She is the daughter of composer and conductor Sir Andrzej Panufnik. She studied at the royal academy of music. She got into composing because of her father and she works as a composer nothing else. Her most famous piece is Westminster Mass which was commissioned for the Westminster Choir. However she has written a wide range of pieces including ballet, opera, music theatre, Choral works and music for movies and tv that is used all over the world. This composer is mostly interested in world music. She is one of the most popular composers in all of the U.K. She was born in London but she is actually of Polish background. Roxanna also studied the harp at the Royal Academy of Music. When she was only sixteen she composed a piece that was performed at the Chichester Cathedral. The first song of Roxanna Panufnik’s that I chose to listen to and Chose for the first song of the three I have to pick is called “Love is the Master”. “Love is the Master” was interesting to me because it had an intimidating sound to it because the voices are so powerful but then the lyrics are not intimidating because it is just talking about love. The song is written for SATB and there are some instruments with it. It is hard to pick out all the instruments that play because there is a whole orchestra that plays with the choir. As I mentioned, the tone of the piece scared me a little bit because it sounds intimidating but it also made the song more interesting to listen to. I could not find any reason behind writing the song. Also I didn’t find any background on this song in particular but it is on an album called “Love Abide” it is a collection of new Choral pieces that she wrote to bridge the gaps in faiths. She wanted to have a whole album of music that would work as spiritual songs for all faiths or almost all faiths which makes sense when you take into account her interest in world music. She wanted something that people all over the world, religion aside, could appreciate and enjoy. She says she was inspired to write these songs also after the birth of her first child because she would often think about what kind of world her daughter would be living in. The second song I chose is called “Zen Love Song” which does not sound like it is in english but I am unable to find exactly what language. The fact that the title has the word “Zen” in it makes the listener think this song will be peaceful and it definitely is. When I listened to the song I saw India in my head. I saw like lots of colors and like someone dancing gracefully but it made me think of India too. The song is very slow and peaceful and it sounds like there are all voices present in the piece so it is SATB.This song was also included on the “Love Abide” album. When you take into account that a lot of these songs were written with her daughter in mind probably you could view this song as a gentle lullabye she would maybe sing or play for her daughter. So it has a lullabye feel to it too.She also I think did have India or at least the east part of the world in mind with this because when she talks about the album she says she had different parts of the world in mind when she was writing these songs. The third and final song I chose for my paper is called “Love Endureth”. I chose this song because it has lots of cool dynamic changes and it sounds really like heavenly but also Omniscient at the same time like creepy but yet soothing at the same time. I also liked the fact that they started off as seperate parts and then they switch to unison and they switch back to their own parts. I like the sopranos in the recording also cause they are just so clear it sounds super pretty. This song is written for all voices again it is actually written in SSAATTBB. This song is in english and also partially in Hebrew. and it appears on her “Love Abide” album. This song sounds like a nice summer day to me of like peace mixed with adventure and maybe a little thrill here and there. In conclusion I really like a lot of her songs because of the sing songy melodies that could be heard in some of the songs just very mesmerizing at some points the music just draws you in makes you think of different scenes around the world depending on what song you listen to. Each song has a similar style to it and I believe she writes mainly for the classical genre which would explain why her songs sound a little similar in the overall tone because she is doing the same style. I like that the purpose behind her whole album was about uniting people and using love as that binding force. I thought that was just a really sweet message about uniting faiths and cultures because that is one thing that all humans have in common is the need for love in their life. The album also showed her love of other world music and it was interesting that she wanted to use her album to bridge gaps in cultures because she actually grew up with a Jewish mother and Polish Catholic father so she grew up around multiple religions. She has first hand knowledge of religions coexisting and that’s what she was trying to get at with her album as well. Although most of her music cannot be accessed on youtube in the U.S. for some reason I did enjoy the songs of hers that I could listen to. I wish her most famous song however would have been accessible. I was interested to hear that piece. I was also surprised that I could not find more information on her even though she is one of the most famous composers of the U.K. I also found it very sweet that her own first born daughter was the inspiration for writing that whole album that all of these songs came from. Overall this composer has a sweet tone to her music but also a powerful message and mission that I respect.
