Response to Movie Sicko Essay

Sicko is a 2007 film by American filmmaker Michael Moore. The film investigates health care in the United States focusing on its health insurance and the pharmaceutical industry. The movie compares the for-profit, non-universal U. S. system with the non-profit universal health care systems of Canada, the United Kingdom, France, and Cuba. Even though, we live in one of the top countries in the world, we still can not get the medical care for free.

I think everyone deserves a right to live a full life, so if some disease comes across it, we should get the best help there is. We pay taxes every day for food, drinks, and such. That means that we pay government in order to receive something in return. On the other hand, every system has its pluses and minuses. So Mr. Moore states that Cuba has one of the best health care systems in the world. So why do people not immigrate in such a big group as they do immigrate to USA? People try to go to USA, legally or illegally, for a better life.

In Cuba people are struggling to survive because the system does not work. So, even though, Cuba has better health care, their everyday life is worse than in the United States. Right after I was thinking about Cuba’s bad economy, Moore gave me other examples. He introduced us with countries, such as France, United Kingdom, and Canada. Those counties have stable economies and the health care is financed by the government. He took some interviews from Americans who live in France.

They all shared their good experiences with its excellent health care that they received and they all stated that they paid just a couple of Euros for medicine. Then he showed some interviews from a regular French family; how they live and what their everyday life is. Their life seemed pretty good. Then, he showed his parents, who live in Canada, and how they were afraid to cross the border with US with no health insurance. I also remember the girl from US, who was diagnosed with cancer and the insurance didn’t want to cover her medical expenses with no good reason.

So she went to Canada to her friend. She went to the hospital told them that she lived in Canada for three months and she got treatment for free. I was amazed that people die here, while debating with theirs insurance companies and in Canada they didn’t even ask her for proof of residency or to prove that she has been living there for three months. So after watching all those interviews, I came to the conclusion that in a capitalistic country everything is about the money. Well, people are still “humans”, but the system itself makes us materialistic.

I think that the United States could make health care just like Canada’s or France’s or United Kingdom’s. The health care system in the USA is one of the biggest businesses. It is not good for simple Americans, but it is very profitable for drug companies, doctors, hospitals, and government, of course. That is why the US does not want to make any changes. I think that Michael Moore made a very good movie. People need an outspoken person like him to stand for people’s rights.
