Puerto Rico was
originally called San Juan Bautista back in 1494. It is located in North
America to the southeast, it has around three million citizens. Its primary
languages are Spanish and English, its one of the few bilingual countries in
world. The flag in Puerto Rico is similar to the one in the U.S. but a bit
different. It has a blue triangle with one white star in the middle and it has
red and white stripes going across. Its currency is the American dollar but in
Puerto Rico they like to call it peso. Most of Puerto Rico’s citizens are Roman
Catholic, but people are free to choose their own religion. The capital of
Puerto Rico is called San Juan it took the name from Spain where most people
came from. San Juan has the biggest Spanish fort in the world called Castillo
singers and actors originated from Puerto Rico like Daddy Yankee and Rita
Doloris Moreno both singers and actors. There is also one of my favorite movie
star and singer Jennifer Lopez, who has won many trophies and accomplishments
throughout her career. The two top genres in Puerto Rico are Salsa and
Reggaeton. Salsa is played with drums and singers. Then there is the dancing
part which you have to follow the flow and beat of the music and dance with
your partner. Reggaeton is your everyday rap with an African beat. Both of
these genres have something in the music that makes you want to dance and that
is why they are so popular not only in Puerto Rico but in the U.S.
has the richest history in North America, in my opinion. It was a sunken island
at first near the Atlantic Ocean over 180 years ago. It rose up due to a big
change in the ocean creating the island of Puerto Rico and its two major
islands Vieques and Culebra.
Puerto Rico has
the brightest bioluminescent bay in world. Its name is Mosquito Bay it is a big
spot for tourists who are going to Puerto Rico. A bioluminescent bay is a part
of the sea that has living organisms which glow at night. The animals that glow
under Mosquito Bay are called Dinoflagellates. They are single-celled organisms
that produce light when they are disturbed. There are five bioluminescent bay’s
in the world. One is in Jamaica, another in Vietnam, and Puerto Rico has the
last three. Out of all of these Puerto Rico’s Mosquito Bay was numbered one as
the brightest. Puerto Ricans have created various inventions in Puerto Rico
which are used throughout all of the world.
One of the things they made is the
hammock which many people use for camping or relaxing.
Puerto Rico is a
small island amid hundreds of other. The island itself was formed approximately
one hundred and eighty years ago. Around that time Puerto Rico was just a
sunken island in the Atlantic ocean. It surged up when some tectonic plates
shifted. The force of the shift sank islands down and brought some up, Puerto
Rico was one of them. It came up with a couple more islands but the two major
ones were Vieques, Mona, and Culebra.
Puerto Rico was founded by Christopher
Columbus back on November 19, 1493. Columbus named the island San Juan Bautista. The name was
changed to Puerto Rico or Rich Port because there was a river with gold in it.
Because the island’s name changed the capital took the the name San Juan.
Columbus didn’t really do anything important except report the island to the
king and queen of spain. Puerto Rico was an important military base for spain.
believe Puerto Ricans are just of Spanish blood but that is not true. The
Puerto Rican race came to be when the Indian, Spanish, and African races came
together and had children.
Puerto Rican blood comes from three different races that
means Puerto Ricans have three different cultures combined. That makes Puerto
Rico very special because it’s very unique in the culture aspect.
Puerto Rico became part of U.S.
territory during the Spanish-American War. It began in 1898, by the explosion
of the USS Maine in Havana Harbor. The war ended with the U.S. taking many of
Spain’s territory in America including the Cuba, Guam, Philippines, and Puerto
If you were
wondering about Puerto Rico’s education, it’s just like anywhere in the United
States. Education in Puerto Rico is mandatory between the ages of six and
seventeen years old. Puerto Rico’s education system is the same as the American
system the only difference is the primary language is spanish. The education is
divided just like in America. First it has its primary education , which is its
first six grades. Then is the secondary education which completes its final
seven years. Finally it has its tertiary education which is their college level
of education. They do
teach English in Puerto Rico but it isn’t very common in public schools,
because it is mostly taught in private schools.
What kind of
music does Puerto Rico have? I can’t even begin to explain how much there is,
so lets start from the very beginning. The Guicharo or Guiro is a gourd that is
hollowed out and makes various rhythms. It originated from Tainos but Africans
also used them.
Next is Bomba and
Plena music originated from the African culture. Bomba is played with multiple
drums creating very energetic rhythms. When playing Bomba there are dancers
that follow the beat and rhythm of the music making it more entertaining. Plena
started around the 1800s and has become a part of Puerto Rican culture ever
since. It is played with tambourines and it also has singers. The music mostly
focuses on social justice and their community.
Then we have
Salsa a very popular genre in the Puerto Rican community. It emerged from the
Puerto Rican neighborhoods in New York during the 60s-70s. Salsa music is made
of latin rhythm and jazz music combined. Salsa was slowly brought to Puerto
Rico and now is one of the island’s best genre. Finally the newest and most
popular genre in Puerto Rico right now is Reggaeton. This type of music is a
mix between Jamaican beats with rap in spanish. Reggaeton is very popular in
nightclubs and bars. Many very popular artists of this genre came from Puerto
Rico including Daddy Yankee, and Tego Calderon. There also Calle 13 one of my
favorite artists because I grew up like two streets away from him, so I grew up
hearing his music a lot.
Puerto Rico has a variety of foods from rice and beans to
Cuchifritos and much more. One of my favorite dishes is one my dad makes on
special occasions or events. It’s Sancocho it is a traditional soup served in
many latin american countries. It has a bunch of different vegetables, and it
has to have a type of meat in it or else it would not be Sancocho.
Another dish which
I ate recently on Thanksgiving are Pasteles. Pasteles are another traditional
dish in latin american countries. It is a very delicious dish it has tiny cut
pork pieces, it has green bananas and much more wrapped in banana leaves. Both
of these are very popular in Puerto Rico and they are mostly served on holidays
like christmas or thanksgiving.
Puerto Rico has
many traditions like any other country. Though the biggest and most popular is
probably the Puerto Rican Day Parade in New York. Thousands of Puerto Ricans
and many others come to celebrate on this day. It is probably Puerto Rico’s biggest
Then we have Three
Kings Day or Tres Reyes Magos in spanish. This is Puerto Rico’s most
traditional holiday. It is on january 6, so Three Kings Day is practically a
more faithful Christmas. On this holiday there are parades, parties, and
festivals. Talking about festivals in Old San Juan throws the biggest festival
on january 6. They have traditional foods, and they have music to keep their
crowd entertained. They also a part of the festival which they give out free
presents to the kids. It was my favorite holiday because it was a second
Christmas for me, so I used to get double the presents every year.
conclusion, Puerto Rico is a very amazing country with rich history of how it
came to be. It came out of the ocean to form an island, that would later be
discovered by Columbus one of the best explorers of his time. Puerto Rico is
made up of three different races Spanish, Taino, and African. Because of these
three different cultures Puerto Rico has a very unique culture that no one else
has. Puerto Rican music is very unique because it mixes the beats from the
African and the language of the Spanish. Puerto Rico has three bioluminescent bays and one of them is number
one in the world for its brightness. The traditions in Puerto Rico are really
interesting like the Three Kings Day,
which is like a second Christmas to them. And the Puerto Rican Day Parade,
which is probably their biggest event every year. Puerto Rico is a very interesting
country, which anyone from anywhere in the world would like to visit.
