Nursing application Essay

RDPN Applicant Essay

I wish to be considered for entry into this psychiatric nursing program with the goal of potentially becoming a registered psychiatric nurse because due to my prior personal experience I have learned that nursing would be best suitable for me. This is because as I volunteered at Hilton Villa care home place I learned many things about patients. Firstly, I noticed that patients with mental illness or mental distress need nurses that could genuinely cooperate with them. While I was volunteering I was helping patients with being able to consume their meals, and keeping them entertained .For example, reading them books and playing games and doing activities with them. This made the patients occupied and happy causing them to have better health. To me, this was the most rewarding feeling ever. Due to this volunteering experience I developed a passion for wanting to pursue a career in psychiatric nursing.

In addition, My personal motivation to potentially become a psychiatric nurse developed from my volunteer experience, as I witnessed the nurses helping the patients in such a positive manner with strong relationship bonds it really persuaded me to want to become a nurse in the future as well. Being able to commit my time for helping patients with mental illness or distress would be a pleasure. Furthermore, contacting with people that suffer mental illness or mental distress could be challenging however as a psychiatric nurse being able to cooperate with this challenging behavior could be difficult at times but I am always willing to accept challenges and would be seeking to engage with the patient to draw on his or her inner resources in addition to any other treatment they may be receiving. Also, as a psychiatric nurse it would be a thrill to develop therapeutic relationships and alliances with patients.

Lastly, my understanding of the role of registered psychiatric nurses is that they are considered health care professionals and have a responsibility to the public to continue to expand their knowledge and understanding of the concepts of mental health and mental illness. Psychiatric nurses also deliver safe, ethical, psychosocial, physical, and spiritual care to people with mental illnesses, their caregivers, their families and communities. As a psychiatric nurse considering patients as their first priority is a must because helping them improve their health is the role of psychiatric nurses. Also the role of psychiatric nurses involves training in psychological therapies, building a therapeutic alliance, dealing with challenging behavior, and the administration of psychiatric medication. Therefore, I believe I am a good match for this program because I have indulged great communication skills, multitasking skills and organization skills throughout my volunteer experience which had a great impact on me wanting to pursue a career in psychiatric nursing. Overall, this position is best applicable for me because my positive energy will easily adapt in to this medical field making a better environment for patients suffering with different types of mental illnesses and mental distresses. In conclusion, I hope to achieve this goal by being enrolled in this program at Stenberg College.
