In this age of innovations, and fast pace of technological advancements, it has been imperative more than ever before to have leaders. The span of lessons that have been gathered from the past, the beauty of today and the challenges of tomorrow need be handled by competent individuals who are simply more than managers, but people of integrity and noble character ready to lead the world to the next important level of expansible improvements in all landscapes.
When there are leaders or better still, people who appear to be leaders. The essence of their leadership would be the level of trust they can gather from their followers. In our daily interactions with other people at home and even at various social centers, we discover that the basis of true friendship is trust. No one can deny the fact you are more comfortable with the devil you trust than the angel you don’t. This is because humans desire and appreciate trust.
It is then more important as a leader to walk to use this element of effective leadership within the organization where one serves. It may not be an easy task to achieve; in fact, it is difficult to get to trust people. But it is not impossible. There are steps to achieving this great fate. To do this, you have to be vulnerable enough for them to identify with your, so that you are not so “unlike” them as to be alien. And, you have to be strong enough for them to feel that they can depend on you.
Research shows that models that are followed, which ultimately means trusted, are models that have the following characteristics:
1. they Possess Strength
leaders possess strength. They show an invaluable of vigor and courage. They see challenges as surmountable mountains. They exude confidence that daily moves their followers along the path of impossibility to the island of certainty. This is a quality that can be achieved. It is built as an inner strength that sees challenges as opportunities to make a change, do the impossible and accomplish the gigantic.
It is easy to run away from the battle. It is not a difficult task to give excuses for failures or inabilities to do. But it takes leadership to face an ominous battle with the hope that victory lies at end of the tunnel. This takes unusual strength. In actual fact, this quality is built over time. It
demands the ability to see things with a bigger schema and be poised to tackle challenges with a winning attitude. This is a way this can be achieved.
2. They possess “likeness” to the ones following them.
Such leaders are not far from their people. One way we build interest in others around us is when they show they are like us. When they appear to be similar, we are home with them and better relate with them. when the leader does not appear to know so much that he can not listen, nor appears so detached from our conditions that he can not bear us then he is not a true leader in my locality the way to achieve this is simply by making sure one leaves a humble life, an outlook of humility helps. It is also necessary to appreciate the feelings of others just
the way they are. The leader should share similar experiences he has had with the followers, and show then the way. This helps to make people feel loved and the sense of belonging is sustained.
3. They are warm. Such leaders are caring.
It is important for followers to know that there leader is a caring person. hostilities no way to built trust it drives people father from us than we can imagine some people think that by being hostile they gain people heart this is not so although it many appear to be when people know you are a person of great noble character with warm heart for everyone they are better ale to trust you than others. Finding out about the welfare status of members showing concerns when they are in challenges area some ways a warm leader shows love to his people. When we a re convinced that we are approach our leader without fear of rejection, that leader has won our heart.
4. They are imperfect and coping models, as opposed to perfect ones.
It is no news that we are imperfect beings n our daily pursuits and interactions with others. Mo matter how strong a leader may be appear, Followers should still be able to know that their leader has nor become a saint overnight; that he is still human and remains a mere mortal like them. This is still consistent with the quality that they have likeness to their followers. This is an important of the model.
Usually, those who are in love with authority and power do not want to show their vulnerability for risk f loosing their relevance. This should not be. Every one is aware that the other person has one weakness or the other; to deny the presence of such is to be insincere to one and to others around. It would therefore be a show of sincerity when we acknowledge our weakness or mistakes before others; it shows our level of sincerity. When we are sincere with people, we naturally gain their trust.
