Last Thursday, I visited an intriguing exhibition called ‘Walking in Seongnam’ in the Seongnam art center. There were various types of artcrafts which demonstrated how authors felt about Seongnam. The exhibition mostly consisted of  arts that  showed how Seongnam looks or how Seongnam has developed in 60 years. There were both positive or negative meanings of every artwork. For example, while one showed how Seongnam landscape and views show the beauty of  Seongnam while the other one drew 3 palettes with grey paint to represent how concrete covered the past history of Seongnam. However, there was an artwork that grabbed my attention and made me focus on that art. Notonly that, it was a type of art that I never saw before. The author of this artwork made an artabout Seongnam by sharing his memory in Seongnam and his perspective in daily life.

The uniqueness of his art was that rather than representing major things of Seongnam such asshowing Tanchon and historical architectures, he showed his small covered room. His art was installation project. There was a rectangular room covered with greyish white paint. I noticed he had used 3 different types of art in the room. The first one showed the window that represented the sky.

The second one depicted his workplace window that was partially covered in vertical metal bars. The last one displayed the lights that supports the lightbulb that is hanging from the ceiling. The first artwork was a window that described a sky.

On the side of the wall, the author made a rectangular hole. Outside the hole, the artist covered the wall with blue paint so that it looks like a sky. The author further used bricks and fake windows to make it look even more realistic. While I was looking at this drawing, I thought about how the author beautifully represented his perspective of Seongnam. I could imagine how the author would had felt by looking at the sky as he worked on his art in an underground basement. Furthermore, the artwork made me connect to a movie called Truman Show.

The movie is about a man called Truman who is trapped in an artificial world and lives with a fake friend and fake family members. Since the sky looked so realistic I immediately thought that this is a real sky. I related myself to a scene in the Truman Show, when Truman reached to the end of the dome and looked at the wall, noticing that this was the was the fake sky that he saw every day. Although the artwork was simple in its forms, I found it to be very meaningful. In future, I will draw artworks that can be plain but have a deep meaning just like the Subin Heo(artist of this drawing)’s artwork.

The second artwork I saw was the workplace window that was covered with vertical metal bars. In this art, he used only light and shadow to show the artwork. The white light and the dark shadow made a good representation of the author’s melancholy mood. It seems like the artist was trying to characterize a  jail using the window, because the combination of shades and metal bars made me think about jails. It seems to show how the author was isolated and locked up inside his room. This contrast shows even though outside the room seems is beautiful but inside his room, he felt lonely.

Next, it was trying to represent that even though Seongnam can look beautiful if you look at each people’s life more specifically and minorly, it’s different from when you see major things of Seongnam. This art also made me envision the author’s life how he feels uncomfortable and trapped by staying in his room for a long time. From now on, I think I will apply more meaningful things in my art so that everyone can easily notice the meaning of my art just like the author’s drawing. The last artwork of the ‘room’ of the author was the light. This artwork used paint and lightbulbs to show the light source of the room. Even though this was a pretty common artwork, I noticed that the light was there to show that it was the only ‘light’ he had in his room. I think this represents a kind of sarcastic meaning that everything in his room is dark and has a melancholy  mood while the only that shows light(happiness) is the light source itself.

Application to my future drawing:  The artwork that I saw will imply a lot to my future artwork. First, the materials uses of light, space, and color of the author’s artwork can be applied to my future artwork. Also, I can use my creativity to go even further from using light , space, and color.

Second, making the drawing simple but meaningful just like the authors. For example, the author improvised jail when he used light and shadow to show his window. Therefore, I can use this type by drawing simple drawings from simple topic but that can also represent a very thoughtful and meaningful drawing.

Last but not least,it inspired me to use space as a artwork. The artist made holes in the wall and if you look at the hole you can notice that the author and colored it skyblue so it looks like real sky. This inspired me to make my future art to make it simple but much more meaningful so it will take less time but the value of my artwork will be higher.
