“Have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow know what you truly want to become.” – Steve Jobs
I wish to apply to the Master of Business Administration program at Linköping University for the 2018 autumn intake. I believe this program is a solid step towards my career as a businessperson who understands science and technology along with the intellectual depth with wider practical knowledge to effect change and improvement within the organization. My ultimate career idea is to hold a management position in an IT firm transforming and managing new innovative ideas to add value to day to day lives of the people. Let me explain how my educational background and experiences makes me a suitable candidate for the program.
In 2009, I earned a Bachelor’s degree with a specialization in Information Technology from Anna University. Benefiting from the broad nature of my subject field, I have been exposed to an extensive range of subjects from business to technology. Having studied the specialized courses, I have acquired the essential skills of systematic research, analytical thinking and information evaluation. Most prominently, they provided me with insight into business management combining with engineering science.
After graduating, I was selected as an International student for the postgraduate programme at Linköping University. I became acquainted with standard education practices and gained a deeper appreciation of the educational framework in the EU. Aside from the favorable learning environment of Linköping University, the program was academically and theoretically rigorous whilst incorporating strong practical elements and encouraging critical and creative thinking. During my studies, I attended management courses on Technical, Economic and Societal Evaluation of IT-products and Project Management. These courses broadened my view of techniques of managerial accounting and management strategy at IT industry, ultimately landed all my interest in pursuing a Master’s degree in MBA.
With a Master’s degree in MBA, I would be able to venture out number of learning aspects and also develop a strong sense of independent thinking by nurturing problem solving abilities, characteristic of student centered learning at your esteemed institution. I believe this program will truly shape me to be compatible with the continuity of change in this era of technology and facing the leadership challenges in the global competition starting with the organization I am currently working.
I am a quick learner with the ability to grasp concepts easily and have demonstrated the ability to think logically and analytically, with the sense of creativity. The best trait of mine was the desire to learn more which was never restricted by the university curriculum. Working in several projects I have been corporative and shown team spirit to work effectively in a team achieving the goals that are required. I incorporated most of the concepts I read about in “Principles of Management” subject. I strongly believe that the excellence of your program, along with my curiosity and capabilities will help me improve my interpersonal skills and technical expertise.
Throughout my career there were several incidents which enabled me to realize my interest within management. Early on in my career, I was in charge of the student competition dedicated towards organizing technical events for the student from different colleges. In retrospect, I believe that this experience provided me with a lot of insights into managing a team and seeing things through to the end, but at the same time it reflects some of my learnings mainly because of some things that didn’t go well. I believe that my exposure to the failure taught me valuable lessons. In the competition, I was selected to conduct the event among my classmates based on my good rapport with the professors and previous roles in student clubs. Our team worked systematically in preparing for the event, I dedicated my time in coordinating and delegating responsibilities among the student members, I was satisfied with our preparation but to my surprise the event was not well received among the participants and the judges. This news was really hard to process professionally and from a morale perspective too. The entire event was supposed to be a success based on all the work that we did but that’s was not the case. This really moved to be revisit what actually went wrong and see what we could learn to improve it the next time. Our first lesson as a team was to never take small things for granted and settle with just “good-enough” mentality. Personally, I learned that I need to pay more attention to the dynamics within the team and read between the lines more. It is always important to go an extra mile even if that’s not the main focus of your role. This experience taught me that even professionally it’s necessary to perform the job as per our satisfaction, but it is most important to perform the job as the per the customer satisfaction. This experience provided me with the insight that most of the internal responsibilities that we held failed to add value to the participants and if we had known about this, we would have looked at this experience from their perspective and would have reevaluated our plans according to that. I believe this experience taught me the most outside of the classroom and reaffirmed my interest towards management and making others happy. It also was a great experience that made me realize what I value the most and what really drives me to work every day.
Finally, I believe that I am still in the growing phase of my career and a master degree will truly shape me to be compatible with the continuity of change in this era of technology and facing the leadership challenges in the global competition. Your University with its commitment to foster an innovative mindset and an entrepreneurial spirit is remarkable and attractive to embark my academic career. Given an opportunity, I will strive at my best to keep up the expectations of the University to enlighten my knowledge and maintain a good rapport with people who intent to frame my flaring future.
