“If freedom of
speech is taken away, then dumb and silent we may be led, like sheep to the
slaughter (Washington).” George Washington is a well-known person in the USA
history. He is mostly known for being a war General and for being the first
President of the USA. While, alive Washington did a lot more to help the United
was born on February 22, 1732. His family lived in Virginia and were very rich.
His family owned tobacco plantations and owned plenty of slaves. Washington’s
dad was named Augustine Washington and his mom’s name was Mary Ball Washington.
Washington had 5 blood siblings and 3 step siblings. His dad remarried with
Jane Butler because of his previous wife dying. George Washington was the
oldest child of Augustine and Mary.
had to have an education when he was young. George Washington was mostly
homeschooled. After class George Washington learned about his families
plantations. Augustine died when George Washington was eleven years old. His
step-brother Lawrence took over the head of the family. When George Washington
was 17, he got his first real job. He became a surveyor for Culpeper County,
Now, in 1753,
George Washington became Major in the French and Indian War. In that same year
he was deployed to Ohio Country Valley to see how strong the French was. In
1754, George “Washington received a commission as a Lieutenant Colonel in the
Virginia Regiment. Lieutenant Colonel Washington successfully attacked the
French camp near present Jumonville. Lieutenant Colonel Washington built Fort
Necessity but was forced to surrender it to overwhelming French and Indian
forces (Alchin, 2017).” This means he had to move troops back and away from the
fort. George Washington was serving under General Edward Braddock in the Battle
of the Monongahela. Sadly, Edward and his troops were surprised and ambushed by
the enemies. In 1755, “Governor Dinwiddie appoints Washington as commander in
chief of all Virginia forces with the new rank of colonel (Alchin, 2017).” While
a colonel Washington was not very active. In 1758, he had the Forbes
Expedition. It was a huge success and pushed the French troops away from Fort
Duquesne. “In the same year, the colonel was denied commission being a British
officer. Since he failed, George Washington became a planter and politician
Washington got married to Martha Dandridge Custis. “Their attraction was
mutual, powerful, and immediate. Martha was charming, accomplished, and, of
course, wealthy. George had his own appeal (Mount
Vernon Ladies’ Association, 2017).” George is huge compared to Martha. He
was over six foot two inches tall compared to his wife being only five feet
tall. George Washington’s military actions and leadership built himself a good
reputation with people. Most widows make binding contracts, but Martha decided
not to make a contract. She said, “for as long as she lived Washington would
have the use of Martha’s “widow’s third,” the land, slaves, and money which
would be handed down to the Custis heirs (Mount Vernon Ladies’ Association,
2017).” Martha’s first husband died about eighteen months before she married
was commander in chief of the Continental Army during the American
Revolutionary War (History.com Staff 2009).” Congress made George Washington
take over the Continental Army. At that time, General Washington had little
experience leading many troops. Unfortunately, General Washington lost more
battles than he won. George Washington did make an amazing strategy for war
against the enemy. George Washington used his new strategy to beat the British
at the Battle of Trenton and Yorktown. “Washington’s greatest wartime legacy was
his decision to surrender his commission to Congress, affirming the principle
of civilian control of the military in the new United States (History.com Staff 2009).” General Washington led his
army to victory against the British.
“In 1789, 69
members of Congress cast their ballots to elect George Washington the first President
of the United States (History.com Staff 2009).” His personality worked well
with the nation’s government. He was like most people who feared a monarchal
government just like the Parliament. President Washington made sure the USA
doesn’t be like an European monarchy. While George Washington was President he
made the White House. The funny thing was that he never lived in the White
House. He was the only President that did not live in the White House. George
Washington also appointed Alexander Hamilton as the first Secretary of
Treasury. Before Washington was the
President there were no parties, but “a two-party political system was created
because of a disagreement between Washington and Thomas Jefferson regarding the
support of France during the French and English War (Sheppard Software).”
was reelected in 1793. Everyone believed that George Washington was perfect to
be President again. He supported the national bank. George Washington was also
distant from the local common people. Washington had to deal with the French
Revolution almost happening. France wanted to drag the USA into war. Our
country was in big trouble. “Washington announced his Neutrality Proclamation.
He declared that the United States would not take sides (SparkNotes 2017).” British troops said they were going to get
off the land but they stayed in the forts. The French believed we needed to
fight and aid them against the British. Both the French and British threatened
to mess with American trading ships. This would have really hurt the economy.
President George Washington had to deal with all these opinions. He is now
known as a “Founding Father” because of what he has done to help America get
through all the bad times.
