Family Nurse Practitioner Role
A Family Nurse Practitioner is a registered professional nurse who has an advanced knowledge in providing health care to individuals, families and groups of individuals within a community across their lifespan. As a nursing practitioner I have major roles that I should comply in order to develop efficiency, to extend good rapport with the patients and their families and to be able to become a full-pledged nurse by heart.
One of the major roles of a family nurse practitioner is to care for the patient; they restore patients strength and lessen their suffering by giving them proper care and medication. A practitioner’s care for his or her patients is a continuous 24 hour per day; a nurse always checks his or her patients. They usually assist patients in doing things that they are not able to do; going to urinals if the patient can not walk alone, eating their meal if the patient is not able to use his or her hands. A practitioner is also authorized to decide what is good for their patients under medical conditions; this is because nurses are supposed to be trusted by their patients. Comforting the family of their patients is also included in the role of a nurse, care and comfort is not only for the patients but for their families too. Thus, caring for the patient is a basic role of a practitioner.
Advocacy is about giving patients the support they need and speaking on that person’s behalf; it is a part of a practitioners’ caring and a part of the trust and closeness between the patient and the nurse. Thus, patient advocate is a major role of a nurse that enables his or her to develop rapport with their patients and their patients’ family.
It is also the role of a family nurse practitioner to ensure that the patients’ environment is secured and free of any organism that may infect his or her patient; a sick patient is more vulnerable to infection and other diseases, this may cause further complications to the patients. A practitioner makes sure that prevention of the spread of infection from one patient to another is observed.
Education is not only for students but for patients too and educating is not only for teachers but also for nurses too. One of the major roles of a family nurse practitioner is to educate their patients about health, wellness and teach patients how to prevent illness. A practitioner promotes and teaches healthy lifestyle and demonstrates things that allow patients to have fast recovery. When a practitioner works with a patient he or she uses the opportunity to teach his or her patient about self care; how to properly take care of yourself. A practitioner teaches both the patient and their family about proper nutrition, proper diet, good personal hygiene, cleanliness, enough sleep, prevention of stress and other aspects that contribute for having a healthy life. Practitioner also teaches a patient on how to minimize the effects of disability for the benefit if having the best quality of life that they can have.
As a family nurse practitioner, I would be able to do my role by doing my job with dedication. Dedication for work is needed in this kind of job because it is not an easy task to be a nurse; you must be whole-hearted. Patience is also needed in this kind of job. I should also follow the work ethics of the nurses and should have a sense of the legal standards in giving medications and a sense of professionalism, with this I can be an efficient nurse in every way.
