Entertainment has been a part of our everyday lives; sometimes we do not even notice that it is surrounding us at all times. There is an assertion that entertainment has the capacity to “ruin society. Based on society today, it is easy to challenge this assertion and say our society is being manipulated in a positive way due to entertainment.
The fact that our modern day society has such easy access to technology allows for entertainment to have a great effect upon people. Informational websites, documentaries, and historical movies are a large part of peoples’ lives. First of all, informational websites such as CNN and FOX allow for people to be aware of what is going on around the world in which they live in. The websites are also made into apps which allow for a cellular device to update one with current events. Also, there are many documentaries which allow for people to understand what happened in the past and allows for them to truly open their eyes to history. For example, a documentary describing what a despotic Hitler was in the mid 1900’s and the eleven million deaths he caused in his life time can really open a viewer’s eyes. Movies cause the same effect, such as the movies 42 and 12 Years a Slave. These two movies show the hardship African Americans had to go through in our history. I know for a fact that the movie 42 made a huge impact on me; I understood the emotional abuse African Americans felt, and I realized how recent such cruelty was.
Another way entertainment has affected our society is through great novels and classical music. Some novels allow one to get a glimpse at history while stile improving their literature techniques such as The Scarlet Letter and To Kill a Mockingbird which are not nonfiction but are situations that could have happened at that time. Also, music is a fine art. Music composed by Ludwig Van Beethoven and Wolfgang Amadaus Mozart is considered great classical music. Classical music is recommended to be played while working because it allows for one to think easier. On the other hand, some people may say that no one watched documentaries or listens to classical music, but that just shows it is the people who have the capacity to “ruin” society.
Entertainment itself cannot “ruin” society.
As one can see, entertainment has embraced many great aspects to peoples’ lives such as informational websites, documentaries, historical movies, novels, and movies. The tools to a positively maturing society are being offered, now it is the choice of society to take them or leave them.
