Ellen was born on Jan 26, 1958 in Metairie, Louisiana. Ellen
DeGeneres was renowned as a stand-up comedian. Her parents took divorce when
she was sixteen years old. She graduated from Atlanta high school in 1976. Later
she enrolled in university of New Orleans but she did not even make it to one
semester. She did variety of jobs until she came toward stand-up comedy. She
made her way to emcee Clyde’s Comedy Club in 1981, by working in many
coffeehouses and clubs. During early 1980’s, she was named as the funniest
person in America as she won a competition sponsored by cable network Showtime.
This opened ways for better gigs for her, as it includes her first appearance on
The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson.
Ellen’s early television did not create a good impression. She
had performed the role of supporting player in two short-lived TV situation
comedies; Open house (1989) and Laurie hill (1992). In 1994, she was on top of
the news because of her own sitcom on ABC “These friends of mine”. It was later
named as Ellen after completing its first season.
During 1997, she created history when Ellen herself openly
announced that she was a lesbian. (She became a staunch advocate of LGBT
rights.) Her show suffered due to this announcement and further they had to
cancel the following season of show. Ellen returned back to stand-up circuit. Later
in 2001, she launched a new series named as The Ellen Show on CBS, but its end
was no different. It also had to face poor ratings and was cancelled.
After two years, in 2003, she was the host of her own show,
Ellen: The Ellen DeGeneres Show (2003) which went really successful in the
audience. The show was a great success. It gained higher rating along with popularity
in the industry and proved as one of the best award winning talk show. And it
became the triumphing 15 Emmy Awards in its first 3 seasons at the air and
turning into the first talk show history to win the Emmy Award for Outstanding Talk show in its first 3
