With stating these facts, the city of Boston, Massachusetts, in the last 20 years has continued to create jobs in sectors such as manufacturing, technology, and service jobs. The economy of the city focuses mostly in the financial, business, service, professional, medical, education, high technology, and defense industry. One of the oldest literary publications based in the United States for many years is Bostons Atlantic Monthly. With the support and sponsorship of these sectors, a fundraiser of this magnitude could succeed in this city.

The population of Boston according to the Census reported in 2010 is 617,594 and key sectors with the highest number of employees are in the health care and social assistance with 113,597 and professional, scientific, and technical services with 53,687 employees. The importance of helping others achieve the education they need to benefit the country and themselves would be the motivation of this kind of activity and to target this audience. By supporting this social activity would support nonprofit organizations such as Massachusetts Coalition of Adult Education (MCAE), and Professional Education Scholarship.

This latest initiative originated as a bill in the wake of a call held on January 8, 2009, to discuss how nonprofit organizations can survive and overcome the current economy. As a result of that bill, co-sponsors by the makers of subsidies associated with the founding of Boston, Massachusetts, nonprofit network, the area of ??New England and the Merrimack Valley, it is clear that nonprofit organizations must ensure that communities and people in need receive the help they need and that would be achieved through concrete action plans. In addition, the need for cash reserves to be ready in time when fundraising is more difficult.

On the other hand, MCAE fact sheet presented in need for services for Adults Basic Education (ABE), which indicate that more than one-third of the state workers do not have the skills required to improve the economic change as accelerated the country. Noting that 46% of adults do not have quantitative skills among others, and therefore, 55% of household heads are single women, not obtaining a high school diploma and suffer from a severe economic situation. The education level of parents affects the future success of children. The 40% of adults who trying enroll in ABE services cannot be for lack of funds in state programs (Mass.

Dept. of Ele & Sec Education, September 2009) Waiting lists can be up to two years. The book festival aimed at these nonprofit organizations is imperative to help these sectors. In this way, we would contribute to the future of the state, and creating funds for continuing education of others. Book festivals are a way to make reading exiting for children. They also relay to children how important it is to read, and most important, to face the world as adults. The responsibility is clear for the community to come together and assist those children who find reading difficult. Book festivals also make reading fun for the whole family.

Involving parents is another way of developing the skills needed and these parents could even be a part of community book festival. When children see their whole family interested in literature, they will more than likely follow their lead. Because this event involves children, more people will want to be involved and be more likely to donate. Corporations, local celebrities, bookstores, and schools can be sponsors. Not only will this fundraiser benefit children, it will also benefit those who donate; donating to a good cause, especially involving children can bring positive publicity to each of the mentioned sponsors.

The fundraising and book festival itself can raise awareness. The unfortunate reality of how grave and widespread adult illiteracy has become a growing epidemic in the United States. The book festival, along with the fundraising efforts will create a movement to act on this growing problem. Organizers are a must in the implementation of any fund raising venture. Organized meetings are held to discuss the desired goals and the time allocated to reach these goals. Each member involved in the fundraising venture should have an assignment; this will prevent overwhelming a person with responsibilities.

Corporations are a good place to start when planning a nonprofit book festival. Managers of corporations will welcome the opportunity to have the corporations’ names associated with a venture that encourages education. To request the assistance of a corporation for a fundraising venture, organizers will first need to send a written proposal; this proposal should start with the highlight of the benefits of this venture and should outline the main reason for the fundraising. The proposal should include the date of the fundraising event, and state that there will be frequent updates to keep the organization informed.

The proposal should state the importance of reading to the community and how encouraging young people to read will benefit them. Persons making donations will feel more of a partner and be more willing to donate, if they are kept abreast of what other companies or individuals are doing to promote the book festival; therefore, it is a good idea to share with donors, what other companies or individuals are participating. Donations can be monetary or a donation of books. A community working together in a book festival is not just important to the venture but also to the community, as this type of involvement encourages community unity.

The community will usually be more respectful and supportive of any business involved in a venture such as a book festival and encourage others to donate as well to support those businesses. When putting together a book festival asking for corporate sponsors to help with the funding is important, organizers will need to raise additional monies to help support the festival. Many venues can help raise money but other fundraising activities will ensure a successful book festival. One way of raising money is to have a walk-a-thon.

A walk-a-thon is an inexpensive way to raise money and also along with promoting education with the book festival it is promoting exercise for good health. Another type of fundraiser is to have a live auction. Volunteers can go out into the community to ask for donations or support items. Explaining to the businesses and local people of the community the reasons for the auction should assist in the efforts of receiving donations. Raffles are another way to assist in raising money. Acquiring a famous author to donate an autographed book to raffle to the public is an idea.

A wide range of auction items can be of use from an autographed book to a subscription to a popular magazine. The options are limitless. A 50/50 raffle is also another good way to raise money. Go around to local businesses and door-to-door to sell the raffle tickets. As an organizer approaches a potential buyer, he or she should introduce themselves and explain the reason for selling the raffle tickets. It will also help if the organizer has permission to post flyers in the windows of businesses to inform the public of the event. Another fun way to raise money is to have Chili cook off.

Almost everyone loves chili and has his or her way of making it. Participants will pay a fee when entering the chili in the cook off. Either have the contestants bring the chili already made in or have them cook it at the location. Contestants cooking the chili on the location will add to the competition. A panel of judges will be on site and prizes awarded for winners. The nonprofit community should have a mission and goals because the nonprofit community is mission-oriented not by profit. The nonprofit community should have plans to set up on how to fund the book festival.

The nonprofit community should estimate the cost of book festival and should use cost-efficient methods. The nonprofit community should use a timeline for the activities and should identify who leads those activities. The nonprofit community should find the funds to finance a book festival such as government grants, foundation grants, book sales, product sales, funds online, and walk-a-thon. Individuals are the largest source for non-funding organizations. Total charitable giving fell 3. 6 % in 2009. Last year was the worst year economically since the Great Depression.

The chart below shows the contributions by sources in 2009 according to Giving USA. [pic] “Another important issue is reporting to IRS. “Tax-exempt nonprofit organizations are required to register with IRS within 90 days of the end of the first calendar year in which have a total revenue $5000 or more” (http://www. irs. gov/pub/irs-pdf/p4220. pdf,p. 11 ) The nonprofit community could succeed by their strategies such as stay in touch with donors, explain to donors impacts of their contribution and mission, show appreciation frequently, focus on annual gifts and planned giving programs.

The nonprofit community should learn how to survive in economic problem times and advertising by direct mail or other social networks, find stories that touches hearts, lower the cost of fundraising, find new projects to raise money, prove the responsibility, diversify fund resources, and search for new fund sources. The nonprofit communities should clearly identify their mission and know their target of resources. The goals needed to identify to reach the mission. Most important approach is to work efficiently and together plan in these economic hard times. The book festival will be a success if all requirements accomplished.
