Listening is one of the most important skills and how well I listen has a major impact on the job effectiveness, and on the quality of relationships with others. Active listening focuses on who you are listening to in order to understand what he is saying. As the listener, you should then be able to repeat back in your own words what they have said. This does not mean you agree with the person, but rather understand what they are saying. Examples of two different situations of active listening
First: When my Grandmother died my mother told me” You know my mother lived to 85. I cared for her. She always said she didn’t want to suffer. She got her wish. She was pain free till the end. And I took care of her all the time.” Actual response: “You were a good daughter.”
Recommended active listening response: “Sounds like you really took good care of her. What’s most important for me to know about your experience with her?” ?Here using Active listening show how much you appreciate your mother, besides it allows you to keep the conversation going. Second:
?Active listing by Repeat what the other person said, Add a personal statement (about yourself) and Ask a question let you flow with ease from one topic to another until you find one that sticks.
After passing an online test of active listening, i discovered the following about myself It takes a lot of concentration to be an active listener as old habits are hard to break and there’s a lot of habit-breaking that shall be done. Active listening is a model for respect. I’m gaining information and perspective. I add nothing by attacking the speaker or putting him down. Using own body language and gestures to convey my attention •Nod.
•Use facial expressions.
•Encourage the speaker to continue with small verbal comments like yes, and uh huh.
So In order to become a better listener practice “active listening” is needed, where I shall make a conscious effort to hear not only the another person words but, more importantly, try to understand the complete message that is being sent, Just I’ll start practicing, and shall find out that conversations will be flowing smoothly.
