“In an instructional setting, plagiarism occurs when a writer
deliberately uses someone else’s language, ideas, or other original (not
common-knowledge) material without acknowledging its source” (Defining and Avoiding, 2003). In other words,
whenever you take somebody’s work and you try passing it as your own without
giving him or her credit for it. It can be intellectual or physical work. Whatever
reasons you have for taking somebody’s work, if you pass it as your own work it
is theft or fraud. Sometimes is done by mistake and people just need to be told
or educated about it. But many other times it is done intentionally and it is
affecting both sides. I think without a good system it’s
really easy to plagiarize by mistake. English is my second language and sometimes
I get certain ideas or use certain phrases without knowing from where I got
them. In order to avoid that, I started recording all material that I read on
the subject that I write the paper. Whenever I read an article, I download it
on my laptop and highlight the information that I intend to use.
